Strontian is a village on the west coast of Scotland, situated in a valley between two sets of mountains, the Moidart Hills to the north and the Ardgour Hills to the south. This location makes Strontian particularly prone to rainfall. As the area receives air masses from the Atlantic Ocean, the mountains surrounding Strontian force the air to rise and cool, which in turn causes the water vapour in the air to condense and fall as rain. The average annual rainfall in Strontian is around 4,500 millimetres (177 inches), making it the wettest place in Britain.
