Activities in Angel Fire, New Mexico

Located at the base of Agua Fria Peak in New Mexico, the city of Angel Fire offers different kinds of year-round activities. Home to the Arts Fest and the Balloon Rally in July, visitors to Angel Fire not only have special events to attend, but outdoor recreation to experience. Whether it's snowboarding in ski area or going on a tour with an outfitter, Angel Fire has something for everyone.
  1. Winter Trail Activities

    • The Angel Fire Resort (angelfireresort.com), a resort/hotel, has beginner, intermediate and expert trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The resort also features night skiing on its trails from December to March.

      Take the family for a guided, overnight snowmobile tour with Angel Fire Excursions (cti-excursions.com), Eagle Nest Marina (eaglenestmarina.com) or Roadrunner Tours (rtours.com) or rent a snowmobile from The Barn Conoco (no website; 505-377-6308) and explore the trails in the area. Ride snowmobiles in 2,200-acre Eagle Nest Lake State Park (newmexico.org), in Eagle Nest, New Mexico, which is only nine miles from Angel Fire.

      Go cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling along trails in Carson National Forest (fs.fed.us) and cross-country skiing in Cimarron Canyon State Park (newmexico.org), both located less than an hour from Angel Fire.

    Summer Trail Activities

    • Mountain bike on the different trails on Chile Express Mountain in Angel Fire's ski area or on a number of trails in Carson National Forest. You can also take a bike tour with the Alpine Fitness Company (no website; 505-377-3892).

      Beginner to advanced hikers can walk along the trails and see views of Moreno Valley and Eagle Nest Lake in the Carson National Forest and in Cimarron Canyon State Park.

      Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures (bobcatpass.com), Sky Ryders Outfitters (no website; 505-377-6302) and Roadrunner Tours offer horseback rides on trails in the Carson National Forest for as little as one hour or for full-day rides. Roadrunner Tours also offers family overnight rides and dinner and breakfast rides; Sky Ryders Outfitters offers guided wilderness trail rides.

      Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures also offers ATV tours in the Old Red River Pass area in the Carson National Forest.

    Water Activities

    • Fish for trout in Angel Fire Resort's Olympic Park Lake and Monte Verde Lake, where you'll find fishing equipment, bait and paddle and rowboat rentals. Spend the day fishing or ice fishing in Eagle Nest Lake State Park. If you want to go fishing for rainbow and brown trout, fish in the lakes in Cimarron Canyon State Park or fish for smaller trout in the park's Clear Creek and Tolby Creek.

      May through July is the best time to enjoy whitewater rafting, kayaking or canoeing in the rivers surrounding Angel Fire, including the Rio Grande and the Chama and Red Rivers.

    Snow Activities

    • Downhill ski on different runs or take skiing or snowboarding lessons in Angel Fire Resort. The resort has two freestyle parks for snowboarders: Lowrider Park and Liberation Park. Slide down 1,000 feet in Angel Fire Resort's tubing hill, Polar Coaster. The hill is lit during the evening and has three lanes that you can access by riding the moving surface lift.

      Taos Ski Valley (skitaos.org), Red River Ski Area (redriverskiarea.com) and Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort (sipapunm.com), all of which are located on parts of Carson National Forest, are other places where you can go downhill skiing, tubing or snowboarding.

      Groups of six or more can take a carriage or sleigh ride with Roadrunner Tours.
