January is an excellent time to be in Arizona, particularly in and around Phoenix. Free from the bitter cold and clouds that grip most of the United States, the average January temperatures in Phoenix are between 40 and 66 degrees Fahrenheit and the sun shines on most days. This mild weather makes Phoenix a perfect winter destination, and there are enough art and craft shows in and around the city and state to suit anyone’s tastes.
The Scottsdale Celebration of Fine Art runs from Jan. 15 through March 27, 2011. It features juried artists creating and selling original paintings, sculptures, jewelry and pottery. The Celebration of Fine Art is, “one of the premiere art events of the West” according to Art & Antiques Magazine. Visitors have the opportunity to talk to the artists and watch them work, in addition to purchasing unique and original pieces of art from up and coming artists. The celebration is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. every day and tickets are $8 for adults and $7 for seniors and military. Children under 12 are admitted free.
For those interested in the art of quilting, the Tombstone Quilt Show and Sale is worth leaving Phoenix for. The town of Tombstone is about three hours southeast of Phoenix. The annual quilt show begins on Jan. 28 and runs daily through Feb. 24, 2011. It features quilts and tops both for show and for sale. Experienced quilters also run daily workshops and classes to demonstrate skills and teach quilting techniques. There is no charge for admission and the Tombstone Art Gallery is open from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. each day.
Sun City West is a suburb in the northwest corner of Phoenix that caters to senior citizens and their unique living preferences. Each year Sun City West holds its annual “Pot Party” where crafters display their hand-thrown pots and other works of clay. The show features more than 50 different artists and also schedules demonstrations of both wheel throwing and hand-building pottery. This show happens on Jan. 29, 2011, at the Clay Club Area of the Beardsley Recreation Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and admission is free.
On Sundays from Jan. 9 through April 3, 2011, visitors to the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts will be treated with live musical performances and arts and crafts. Visitors can browse the available art or shop at the Store @ Scottsdale Center. There are also hands-on art activities for children and families and you can gain free admission to the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art. The A’Fair happens from noon through 4 p.m. on Sundays in the green park next to Old Town Scottsdale and the concerts and museum admission are free.
