'80s Music Clubs in Houston

The 1980's were a time of mullets, jumpsuits and acid-washed jeans. It was also a historically significant period of time in music. Music Television, or MTV, launched, and bands like The Cure were hitting airwaves. Bars and clubs across the country still honor this period in music either through exclusive '80's-themed venues or through '80's-themed nights. Although Houston, Texas, might be best known musically for country-western tunes, it also offers '80's events.

  1. Numbers

    • Numbers Nightclub is a live music and dance venue that specializes in playing '80's music. When a live act isn't performing, disc jockeys are known for playing music from artists such as Depeche Mode, The Cure and the Beastie Boys. The venue also features video projectors, screens and monitors that play remixed music videos. Pool tables, pinball and other games are also located throughout the club. The venue admits those 18 and older on club dates, but it is an all-ages venue on concert dates.

    Venue

    • Although not an exclusive '80's music club, Venue hosts monthly "I love the 80's" nights for those at least 21 years old, where either disc jockeys or live bands play music from the time period. Venue is an 11,000-square-foot club that offers four areas of private seating. It is open only on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. It also enforces a dress code - no hats, sneakers or t-shirts are admitted.

    Etro Lounge

    • Etro Lounge, located on Houston's Westheimer Street, is an '80's venue featuring everything from underground to pop music from the decade. The club is open seven days a week and also features a variety of games and activities from the 1980's. Guests can play Connect Four, Battleship and chess. An Atari console is also on hand for gamers. According to the Houston Press, there is nothing flashy about the club: there is no dress code, and the floor is concrete.
