After living in America for five years, with the necessary permits, residents may apply for naturalization, which means being recognized as a permanent citizen of the United States, with the rights and responsibilities entailed. The naturalization process involves complex legalities, so prepare yourself to meet strict requirements to qualify.
Answer questions from a checklist of immigration requirements, which are found on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, USCIS, webpage entitled "Citizenship Through Naturalization."
Download and complete the Application for Naturalization form N-400 from the USCIS website. Your library can help you with this, if necessary.
Gather required documents. These include a photocopy of both sides of your Permanent Residence Card, known as your Green Card; two identical color photographs of yourself, with your Alien Registration Number marked lightly in pencil on the back; and a check or money order for processing fees. Find the current requirements, including any additional requirements that are specific to your circumstances, in the USCIS document "Guide to Naturalization."
Send your completed application form and the necessary documents to the USCIS Lockbox facility that serves your region. Two facilities are located in Phoenix, Arizona, two facilities in Texas, and two facilities in Nebraska. The "Guide to Naturalization" provides more information about regional service areas.
Take a naturalization test, provide fingerprints and undergo an interview once the USCIS contacts you with an appointment time and date. Take an oath as the final stage of the process.
