Known as the Lowcountry, the southernmost area of South Carolina is a destination spot for vacationers. Lowcountry cuisine, Southern with Caribbean and African influences, frequently includes dishes with rice, grits, local produce and seafood. Charleston is home to many restaurants serving a staple dish of the Lowcountry: shrimp and grits. Visitors to Charleston can enjoy this traditional dish in a variety of styles in fancy and casual restaurants alike.
Chef and owner Robert Stehling, the 2008 James Beard Award winner for Best Chef in the Southeast, serves up classic southern food made from local ingredients. At Hominy Grill, shrimp are sauteed with mushrooms, bacon and scallions and served over cheese grits. Other dishes on the menu are biscuits with sausage gravy, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken, shrimp creole and she crab soup. Stehling and Hominy Grill have been featured in such publications as The New York Times, Gourmet magazine and Food & Wine magazine. Hominy Grill serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner.
