Academic camps in New Jersey offer lessons in a variety of subjects including computer programming, environmental science and creative writing. Camps are tailored to provide the most age-appropriate instruction possible, with small group classes led by experienced teachers. Most camps require that participants choose a specific area of interest, but still allow kids to participate in more than one program throughout the summer.
Centenary College offers a variety of academic summer programs for young adults between the ages of 13 and 18. Week-long programs are available in creative writing, radio and broadcasting, environmental science, veterinary science, education and forensics. Students choose one course per week. The creative writing classes teach campers to transform an idea into a written piece of work through imagination and structure. The course discusses the importance of plot, character development, editing and more. The forensic science program caters to inquiring minds through hands-on experience with crime scene investigation techniques. Students get to try out fingerprinting, print lifting, castings and blood spatter analysis. At the end of the week, campers participate in a simulated crime scene investigation to test their newly learned skills. Programs begin every Sunday and continue through Friday. Campers who choose to participate in more than one program may stay at the college during the weekend in between programs.

Champions Science Adventures offers week-long camping programs for children between the ages of 5 and 12. Programs take place at multiple locations throughout the state and include courses like the "Mystery of the Pharaoh's Treasure" where students learn to interpret hieroglyphics. The "Go Wild" program introduces campers to wild animals and plant life. At the 2010 Space and Rocketry camp, children get to build and launch custom-built "rockets" at more than 70 miles per hour, while at Gizmos Robot Factory, kids learn how to design and build their own robots.

iD Tech Camps are offered at Princeton University and Seton Hall University for children and adolescents between the ages of 7 and 18. Students stay in the universities' dormitories and spend the days learning about computer technologies with a student-to-instructor ratio of 6 to 1. Campers choose between several programs including graphic design, web design and Flash animation, programming in C++ or Java, game design and digital photography, and Photoshop. The Web Design and Flash Animation course teaches campers how to use Adobe Dreamweaver, Wacom pen tablets and more to create animated graphics. The Programming in C++ or Java course requires that participants have a working knowledge of algebra to develop projects using Microsoft Visual Studio Express.
