Cabin Camping for Families in North Texas

Cabin camping is a great way for families to hike, ride horses and enjoy other outdoor pursuits while still spending the night in a comfortable bed. Families have several options to choose from in northern Texas, with its prairie landscapes and big skies.

  1. Cottonwood Springs Ranch

    • Cottonwood Springs Ranch offers several cabins, including the Log Cabin, which sleeps four with a pull-out sofa. Cottonwood Springs, in the Texas Panhandle, has a number of nature trails, groves of cottonwood trees and other natural features for families to enjoy. Museums and other historic sights are a short drive away. Cottonwood Springs also offers day spa services. Cabin rentals cost $85 a night for two people, as of June 2010; the price includes a continental breakfast. However, for more than two people, you must book a vacation ranch experience, which includes a variety of activities, such as guided trail walking and horseback riding. These are for three or seven days, and cost, respectively, $750 and $1,250 per person.

    Last Chance Hideout

    • Further east, along the Oklahoma border, is the Last Chance Hideout on Lake Texoma. This cabin camping facility offers access to fishing and hiking. Visitors can hire fishing guides or rent a horse for the afternoon at a nearby ranch. Summer rates are $100 a night for two people with $10 for each extra person, as of June 2010. Winter rates are $70 a night for two, with $10 fee for each additional person.

    Deer Lake Cabins

    • Deer Lake Cabins are located on two ponds, both of which offer boating and swimming. Deer Lake Cabins offers a variety of rentals, including kayaks and pontoon boats for $10 an hour, mountain bikes at $10 a day and horseback rides for $45 an hour, as of June 2010. The eight cabins cost differing amounts. For example, the one-bedroom Sunshine Cabin rents for $110 a night, while the three-bedroom Allen House costs $220 a night, as of June 2010.

    Creek Harbor Camp Eagle Mountain Lake

    • Creek Harbor specializes in in all things aquatic: boat rental, fishing pole rental and bait sales. Cabins are outfitted simply with a double bunk bed or two twin beds. Bedding is not provided, and toilets and showers are in a separate building. The cabins are, however, air conditioned and come with a picnic table and charcoal barbecue. These cabins cost $50 a night double occupancy, $65 on holidays, as of June 2010. Each additional person is $3 a night.

    Lake O' The Pines Lodge

    • Lake O' the Pines Lodge offers cabin camping along a lake. A rock waterfall and a swimming pool are close to the cabins. The facility also offers a variety of nature walks, an amphitheater and biking opportunities. There are five cabins. One has one queen bed, three have two full beds and one is equipped with a queen bed and a full bed. As of June 2010, the first cabin rents for $75 a night, while the other four cost $85 a night. If you pay for six nights, a seventh night is free.
