Man has long had a fascination with water and finding a way to live underwater. Across the world, there are many plans for underwater hotels, from two different concepts in Dubai to a mysterious self-appointed seven star resort under tight wraps in Turkey. However, in the United States, there is only one, fully functioning Underwater Hotel. Located in Key Largo, Fla., the Jules Undersea Lodge gives people the chance to live like a fish in a converted research habitat.
Unlike some of the other concept underwater hotels, the Jules Undersea Lodge lies 21 feet beneath the surface. The entrance is on the bottom of the habitat and is roughly the size of a cottage. There is a wet room, a living and two bedrooms each with their own private bath. Bedrooms have a double bed and a pullout berth. The living room features a phone, mini-kitchen, TV/DVD and a marine radio. The showers are rigged to have hot water.
There is no shortage of packages or range of prices for the Jules Undersea Lodge. The smallest of the packages will run you $125 per person with a two-person minimum as of 2010. You will get three hours in the lodge with unlimited diving for those certified. Rates and themes increase from there, in addition to the amenities. A European package costs $375 per person per night and lets you gain certification by either PADI or NAUI, both respected diving educators. The Ultimate Romantic Package will run you $1,295 per night for a couple and comes complete with mood music, flowers, appetizers and breakfast.
The Jules Undersea Lodge has quickly become a favorite destination for weddings. After scuba diving down to the entrance, wedding parties enjoy the full use of the lodge for both the ceremony and the honeymoon. A notary public who dives down in the afternoon conducts the ceremony. Then follows the toast and cake cutting, plus a dinner consisting of shrimp cocktail, steak or lobster and dessert, all prepared by the chef in the lodge. The cost is $1,750 plus a charge of $175 per guest.
While visiting the Key Largo Undersea Park and the Jules Undersea Lodge, take advantage of the Emerald Lagoon on the surface to participate in some diving and snorkeling. Equipment can be bought at the park and there are small fees for use of the lagoon. For adventuresome divers there are night dives available.
There are several things you must consider and be aware of before you dive. If you are pregnant or are insulin diabetic, you will not be allowed to dive. You will need a doctor's note if you have a history of heart disease, high blood pressure, seizures, lung disease, ear disease, diabetes or asthma. In addition, it is not recommended that you drink before diving, as this can lead to an increase in nitrogen narcosis, dehydration and hypothermia. Dehydration can hide the effects of decompression illnesses.
