For most of us, planning a vacation involves making a few big decisions. Where to go is the first thing, followed by how you're getting there and then where to stay once you arrive. If you plan on going to the coast or a lake, picking a hotel close to the shoreline is the usual place to stay. Now, instead of spending your time looking at the water you can actually spend your vacation under the water.
The Poseidon Underseas Resort was opened in 2010 and is located off the island of Fiji. This resort was built 40 feet below the ocean surface in a 5,000-acre crystal blue lagoon. The hotel has 24 suites as well as a restaurant, library, wedding chapel, theater and other amenities encompassed in a large, mostly acrylic structure right on the ocean floor. Along with an awe-inspiring view of underwater reefs and marine life, you can learn to pilot an underwater submarine to take a tour of the surrounding lagoon. Along with scuba diving and golf (on land), you can relax after an activity-filled day in the Poseidon Resort's underwater spa and let the serenity carry you away. Entry to the resort is via topside elevator to the rooms below.

Located in Key Largo, Florida, is Jules' Undersea Lodge. This hotel was previously known as the La Chalupa underwater research laboratory, which was used to examine the continental shelf off Puerto Rico. The size of the hotel is similar to that of a small house with the amenities being rather basic. The lodge comes with a refrigerator and microwave, hot shower area, books, movies and videos. The habitat can accommodate 2 couples or parties of up to 6 with a 24-hour on duty staff to assist lodgers with any requests. You can also have a gourmet chef cook dinner for you in the lodge itself. Entering the hotel can be tricky, however, as you must scuba dive 21 feet under the surface to gain access. You do not need to be a certified diver.

Located approximately 1/2 mile off shore, Hotell Utter Inn offers a one-room underwater dwelling located on Lake Malaren in Vasteras, Sweden. The room, which contains twin beds and a table, is suspended below a small red floating lake house and allows the occupant to sleep about 10 feet underwater with surrounding views of the lake's marine life. Entrance to the room is by a ladder from the upper house. Once you arrive, you will be rowed out to the little red house, given an inflatable boat then left to yourself. Close by is an uninhabited island you can explore or you can simply go boating on the lake. For an additional expense, you can have an inn employee return later that day with your evening supper.
