Fun Things to Do in Upstate New York

Though there is no definite area that defines the region of Upstate New York, the region is typically defined as the entire state, outside of Long Island and Manhattan. In this region, there are many activities, including outdoor recreation, theme parks and historic sites. If travelers are going to be visiting the area, they might consider doing some of these diversions.

  1. Adirondack Balloon Flights

    • Adventure seekers can soar over the Adirondack Mountains in a hot air balloon offered by New York State's first hot air balloon ride company. Visitors will see breathtaking views of the Adirondack Mountains, several of New York waterways and the vast expanses of countryside and farmland and they may even be able to see Albany on a very clear day.

      Flights are offered seven days a week from April to November and take off at both sunrise and sunset. Small groups of up to eight people can fly, or couples can arrange for a private flight for two people.

    Merry-Go-Round Playhouse

    • Theater goers can take in a show at the "Broadway in the Finger Lakes." Merry-Go-Round Playhouse is located in the town of Auburn in the Finger Lakes region of Upstate New York. The playhouse is central Upstate New York's most popular summer playhouse, putting on four different productions each season. Some shows include "Meet Me in St. Louis" and" Man of La Mancha." The season runs from June to October. Performances are offered Monday through Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and Friday through Saturday at 8 p.m. Curtain times for select matinees is at 2 p.m. Seating begins half an hour before curtain call.

    Artpark

    • Artpark is western Upstate New York's leading music and theater location. Located in historic Lewistown in the Niagara region, the park sits on 150 acres that overlook the Niagara gorge. Visitors in a musical or theater performance on the main-stage or in the outdoor Amphitheater. There are also several studios where they can take in visual arts. The location provides more than just an experience with the arts. Guests can also enjoy a picnic, take in nature on the hiking trails or go fishing. The Artpark is open seasonally, May through October.
