Pine Island is the largest island on Florida's west coast. It is known for its fishing waters and rural atmosphere, and is protected from urbanization by local legislation. In contrast to much of Florida's coast, this island's coast is dominated by mangroves and has no existing beaches. Travelers will find a number of campgrounds in the area.
One of the few campgrounds actually located on Pine Island, the KOA rents cabins, RV slots and tent sites. Far from rustic, this facility features a heated pool and Jacuzzi, computer room and cable TV, tennis court, fully-stocked store, bicycle rentals and shuttle service to beaches and local attractions. It's adjacent to a paved trail offering access to the rest of the island. Reservations should be made as early as possible through the KOA website.

Cayo Costa is a pristine island to the west of Pine Island, accessible only by ferry or private boat. It boasts nine miles of beach and acres of pine forests, biking and hiking trails, scuba, snorkeling and swimming areas, canoe and kayak rentals, boat slips and surf fishing, rustic cabins and tent camping spots. Reservations are recommended, and if guests have no boat they must purchase a ferry ticket (and pay to park your car in the ferry lot). Pets are allowed, but must be kept on a leash and away from beaches and cabins. The park is open year-round; gates close at sunset, and there is no electricity on the island.

A small local campground located at the northern tip of Pine Island, this site claims to have tent sites available year-round. Very little information is available online, but the location is ideal: near the Cayo Costa ferry and adjacent to the northern island bays.

Mary's Fish Camp, located on the Mud River, is a fisherman's paradise near Pine Island. More of an RV park than a campground, Mary's has both parking sites and furnished cabins. Mary's also boasts excellent fishing: daily fishing hours are 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., with a daily rate of $4 to $6. Fishing boats can be docked here, and bait and tackle are available. This alcohol- and profanity-free campground is suitable for children and families, but not for more rugged outdoorsmen.
