Campgrounds Near Avery Island, Louisiana

Avery Island, Louisiana, is 140 miles west of New Orleans in Iberia Parish, one of the state's traditional Cajun regions. The island consists of 2,200 acres of live oaks and other subtropical flora surrounded by flat coastal marshes. There are no camping facilities on Avery Island, but campgrounds in the surrounding countryside make good bases for exploring area attractions.
  1. General Camping

    • KOC Kampground, 8 miles northeast of Avery Island on the outskirts of New Iberia, has shaded sites for tents, trailers and RVs. Sites feature full hookups, cable TV and wireless Internet. Park amenities include bathrooms, hot showers, laundry facilities, a swimming pool and a fishing lake. Abbeville RV Park, 22 miles northwest of Avery Island, has sites for tents, trailers and RVs. Tent sites are in a wooded area surrounded by a 1-mile nature trail, and RV sites are shaded with full hookups. Laundry facilities, restaurants and grocery stores are within 5 minutes of the park.

    RV Parks

    • Betty's RV Park is 23 miles west of Avery Island in Abbeville, the heart of Louisiana's Cajun country, and just 2 miles from the city's historic downtown. The RV sites have full hookups, wireless Internet, picnic tables, a barbecue pit and playground equipment. Audubon Acres RV Park is 30 miles west of Avery Island and 10 miles south of Abbeville. The no-frills park has RV sites with full hookups, a shaded lawn and back roads for biking. Audubon is a good choice for campers who plan to visit the nearby Whitelake Wetlands Conservation Area.

    State Park Campgrounds

    • Palmetto Island State Park, 32 miles southwest of Avery Island, is on the Vermilion River, which provides opportunities for boating, kayaking and canoeing. The park has campsites for tents, trailers and RVs with water and electrical hookups. Palmetto Island also has a primitive campground without hookups that includes four walk-in sites for backpackers. Lake Fausse Pointe State Park, 34 miles northeast of Avery Island, is a wilderness crisscrossed by waterways. The park has campsites with and without water and electrical hookups. Backpack campsites and a primitive camping area that accommodates 50 people are also available.

    Area Attractions

    • Jungle Gardens on Avery Island is a 170-acre complex of walks and drives through live oaks, camellias, azaleas and lagoons filled with wildlife. Alligators, deer and raccoons inhabit the marshes and hills around the gardens. The complex includes Bird City, a nesting structure in a pond that is home to thousands of snowy egrets each spring. The gardens also include an 800-year-old Buddha. Whitelake Wetlands, 52 miles west of Avery Island, is home to a 2-mile birding and nature trail. Visitors can expect to see waterfowl, wading birds and songbirds.
