What Are Airports With High Density Traffic?

Many of the United States' largest cities -- New York, Los Angeles, Chicago -- also have the highest levels of traffic volumes in their airports. Millions of passengers fly in and out of these airports annually. Airports with high density traffic numbers usually include commercial, military and cargo flights. When flying out of a high density traffic airport, passengers should arrive to the airport at least an hour before their flight.
  1. John F. Kennedy International Airport

    • Commonly known as JFK, John F. Kennedy International Airport serves greater New York City and has the highest density traffic in the Big Apple. In 2010, JFK accommodated over 46 million passengers with approximately 397,000 plane arrivals and departures. This airport has seven terminals and 125 aircraft gates. JFK is on Jamaica Bay near the Queens borough of New York City.

    Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport

    • One of the world's busiest airports -- in terms of traffic -- is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Atlanta, Georgia. The airport serves over 240,000 passengers each day and has approximately 2,700 daily arrivals and departures. Hartsfield-Jackson serves the greater Atlanta/North Georgia area. The airport is less than 30 minutes south of downtown Atlanta.

    Chicago O'Hare International Airport

    • The largest airport in the greater Chicago, Illinois, area is Chicago O'Hare International Airport. In May 2011, O'Hare serviced over 5.8 million passengers for domestic and international flights. The airport also hosted nearly 75,000 arriving and departing flights. O'Hare is on the western edge of greater Chicago, approximately 45 minutes from the Loop -- Chicago's business district.

    Los Angeles International Airport

    • Los Angeles International Airport is more commonly known as LAX. This airport hosted over 46,000 arriving and departing flights in May 2011; this statistic includes domestic and international flights. LAX's flights seated over five million passengers. This airport is on the westside of greater Los Angeles, less than 30 to 45 minutes from downtown.

    Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport

    • The Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex features the highest density traffic airport in Texas, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. The nickname for this airport is DFW. DFW provided flight service to 4.8 million passengers in May 2011. In that same month, DFW had over 52,000 flights arrive and depart from the airport. DFW is in western Dallas, within 45 minutes of Dallas and Fort Worth's downtown areas.

    Washington Dulles International Airport

    • The busiest airport in the metro Washington D.C. area is Washington Dulles International Airport. From June 2010 to May 2011, Dulles hosted nearly 337,000 domestic and international flights. These flights serviced 23.8 million passengers. This airport hosts flights for over 70 commercial airlines. Dulles is on the western edge of the greater D.C. area, located in Arlington County, Virginia; the airport is within an hour of downtown Washington.
