NWA Delta Airlines Flying Rules

Air travel requires passengers to adhere to the rules of the airline they are traveling with. Failure to do so can result in passengers having an unpleasant or inconvenient flight. Since the Northwest Airlines and Delta merger in 2008, the companies were combined under the Delta brand, and passenger policies were updated.
  1. Children Traveling Alone

    • Delta does not allow children who are four years old and younger to travel alone. Children within this age group must be accompanied by an adult over 18 years old. Children ages 5 through 7 may travel alone on flights that are nonstop only. Kids between 8 and 14 may travel on nonstop or connection flights. Children 15 years and older may travel as unaccompanied minors.

Unaccompanied minors will not be able to check in to get their boarding pass at the airport unless an adult (over 18 years old) is with them. Delta representatives are available to assist children through the Delta Unaccompanied Minor Program, for an additional fee.

    Carry-on Luggage

    • Passengers have the option of checking their luggage or carrying it onto the plane. However, Delta has strict regulations for carry-on items. Baggage that is carried on must not exceed 45 linear inches, or be larger than 22-by-14-by-9 inches. It is a flight policy to check all luggage larger than these dimensions. Delta allows passengers to carry on one personal item -- such as purse, diaper bag, briefcase or laptop computer -- and one additional carry-on item. Jackets, umbrellas, food and drink do not count as personal or additional items.

    Checked Baggage

    • Delta Airlines charges a fee for checking baggage, and the fee depends on the destination. Fees apply only for one-way travel and are charged per bag. Baggage must be 50 lbs. or less, or oversize handling charges are applied to the fee. Additionally, checking more than two pieces of luggage subjects travelers to excess baggage fees.

Certain exceptions are made for passengers traveling first or business class. These passengers are allowed to check up to three bags, up to 70 lbs. each, at no charge.

    Same-Day Travel Changes

    • It is possible to change your travel plans on the same day with Delta Airlines. The rules state that passengers may change the time of their flight for a fee of $50. Changes must be made and confirmed three hours prior to the originally scheduled departure time. Some refundable tickets may be able to be changed on the same-day with no additional charge. Diamond, Platinum or Gold Medallion members can also make same-day changes at no additional cost, through the Delta policy for same-day travel benefits.
