List of Major American Passenger Airlines

North America is home to some of the largest air carriers worldwide, operating out of Atlanta, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas-Ft. Worth hubs, Major airlines, such as Delta and United, fly to virtually every major city in the world, although some carriers do not provide direct non-stop service to Africa and the Middle East. Some carriers, such as Continental and Southwest, focus their routes on domestic travel, although Continental has regular service to Europe, Mexico and Japan.
  1. Delta

    • The Atlanta-based Delta Airlines features extensive air routes worldwide. Since 2000, Delta has established additional routes to Ghana, Liberia and Nigeria in Africa and expanded its services to Beijing, Osaka, Nagoya, Palau and other Asian cities. It also flies to virtually every major transportation hub in Europe and has added services to the Caribbean and Latin America. In 2009, Delta carried 67.4 million passengers. Its 2010 fleet of 671 aircraft included the Airbus A330 series, Boeing 737, 757, 767 and 777s and McDonnell-Douglas DC9s

    American

    • American Airlines, based in Ft. Worth, travels to Africa, Asian Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, Latin America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East and all major transportation hubs in North America. In 2010, it operated a fleet of 626 aircraft that included the Airbus 300, Boeing 717, 737, 747, 757, 767, 777, BAe 146, Fokker and McDonnell-Douglas DC 10 and 11 and the MD series. In 2009, American Airlines carried 85.7 million passengers.

    United

    • The Chicago-based United Airlines in 2009 carried 56 million domestic and international passengers to Asia, Europe, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East and all major and secondary hubs in North America. In 2010, it had 350 aircraft that featured the Airbus 319 and 320, Boeing 737 747, 757, 767 and 777, Canadair, Bombardier Dash 8, Embraer 170 and ERJ 145, and the Saab 340.

    Continental

    • Continental Airlines, based in Houston, features an extensive domestic air route service in the United States, particularly in the eastern states. It also has a wide range of routes to Mexico and Western Europe. Its routes to South Asia and South America are limited. Continental does not have services to the Middle East and Africa, but in 2010 the airline was planning routes to Cairo and Lagos, Africa. Nearly half its 640-aircraft fleet in 2010 consists of regional planes, such as Beechcraft, the Bombardier series and the Embraer series. Larger aircraft for the international routes are the Boeing 737, 757, 767 and 777. In 2009, Continental carried 43.9 million passengers.

    Southwest

    • The Dallas-based Southwest Airlines serves 35 U.S. states and the District of Columbia, including 224 daily departures from Law Vegas and 3,200 departures from all cities in 2010. The airline in 2010 did not fly to Alaska or Hawaii and it had no international flights. In 2009, 21.2 million passengers flew Southwest. In 2010, Southwest operated 544 Boeing 737s.
