British Airways Travel Regulations

When you book a flight with British Airways, you enter into a contract with the airline that is governed by a number of factors such as the conditions printed on the ticket, conditions of carriage and the carrier's regulations. A condition of traveling with BA is that you must obey these regulations, which cover such matters as forbidden items in baggage, restrictions on using electronic devices on aircraft and bag size limits.
  1. Banned and Restricted Items

    • BA has a list of items that you may not carry when you travel on its planes. These include disabling devices such as mace and pepper sprays, flammable gas cylinders, flammable liquids such as paint, lighter fuel and solvents, and toxic substances such as weedkiller and insecticides. A second list of restricted items that may be carried with BA's permission includes ammunition, as well as camping stoves and fuel containers, and "heat-producing articles" including underwater torches and soldering irons. Items that do not require notification but are subject to limits on dimensions and quantities include aerosols and hair curlers containing hydrocarbon gas.

    Electronic Devices

    • BA staff can instruct you to switch off electronic devices when you're on board aircraft for safety reasons. Items covered by this regulation include mobile phones, laptops, iPods, recording devices, electronic games and walkie-talkies.

    Baggage

    • Checked baggage: Your baggage allowance will vary depending on which ticket type and class you book. Free allowances vary from one bag weighing up to 50.7 pounds in economy to three bags each weighing up to 70.5 pounds in first class. Bags should be no larger than 35.5 inches by 29.5 inches by 16 inches, including the handle, pockets and wheels, though larger items such as sports equipment and musical instruments may be carried. Note that allowances on codeshare flights and services operated by BA's partner airlines may vary.

Hand baggage: You're allowed to take one piece of hand baggage plus a laptop or handbag on board. The bag can measure up to 22 inches by 18 inches by 10 inches, including handle, pockets and wheels, and the laptop case or handbag can measure up to 18 inches by 14 inches by 8 inches. The weight restriction states that you have to be able to lift the bag into the overhead locker without any help.

    Other Regulations

    • BA's other regulations cover matters such as unaccompanied children, passengers with a disability, pregnant women and sick passengers, animals, and smoking and drinking alcohol on aircraft. Passengers with a disability who require special help must tell the airline about this when they book. BA may require that such a passenger travels with an attendant for safety reasons.
