How to Correct a Name on an Air Ticket

If you have made a mistake when entering your name for an air ticket purchase you cannot use the ticket. When traveling, your name on your air ticket must match the name on your government-issued identification. If your air ticket has an error you must get a new ticket. In some instances you can get your name corrected on the ticket for a fee. However, sometimes airlines do not allow a name change and make you cancel the ticket and purchase another one.

      Look on your airline booking confirmation for a contact number for the airline. If a phone number is not listed you may have to look on the airline's website.

      Review the change and cancellation policy on your airline confirmation before calling the airline. This will let you know if you will get a credit if you have to cancel and rebook your flight. You may also find information on any fees associated with changes.

      Contact your airline directly to ask about doing a name corrections. Some airlines, such as American Airlines, allow a name change for legitimate purposes if you pay a fee. Legitimate reasons include a name misspelling, a name change and a change to the name prefix.

      Pay the change fee associated with changing the name on your air ticket. Once you pay for the changes your air ticket will be issued in your corrected name. Ask for a confirmation of the change to be sent to your email address or fax machine.
