How to Take Fresh Vegetables on a Domestic Flight

Taking fresh fruits and vegetables on some international flights, particularly on flights with destinations in the tropics, is absolutely forbidden because of quarantine-related issues. Domestic flights do not have this problem, as a country does not typically quarantine things from itself. Certain parts of countries, such as Hawaii, California and Washington in the United States, have problems with the transportation of homegrown fruits in particular areas, or the shipping of some fruits. If you are uncertain, you may ask your airline. If you are simply wishing to bring fresh vegetables on board a flight for your personal consumption while on board, your vegetables will not be a quarantine concern; rather, the Transportation Security Administration is in charge of determining whether you are in compliance with its rules.

Things You'll Need

  • Original packaging (if possible)
  • Plastic food wrap or plastic food containers

Instructions

    • 1

Keep all foods in original packaging if at all practical. All food must be wrapped and will have to go through an X-ray.

    • 2

Wrap or enclose any peeled or partially eaten fruits or vegetables in plastic food containers.

    • 3

Leave unpeeled fruits and vegetables alone. Unpeeled natural foods are fine to be unwrapped, but to be absolutely certain at the checkpoint, you may want to consider wrapping them or putting them in a plastic food container. Aside from that, for sanitary reasons, you may wish to send your vegetables on the X-ray belt in a container or wrapping.
