Biggest Airports in Germany

Germany has a number of large airports that, with its railways, serve as a hub of its transport system. The capital of Berlin is served by a number of smaller airports, with the larger airports being based in former West Germany in the industrial and cultural centers. Cheap domestic and European flights have meant that German airports have been growing in size.
  1. Frankfurt

    • Frankfurt is Germany's largest airport, served by more than 125 international airlines. It is the second busiest airport in Europe after London's Heathrow. It has scheduled connections to more than 300 destinations in more than 100 countries. It has two terminals and three runways, with plans to construct a fourth runway and an extra terminal in the future to help cope with the air traffic.

    Munich

    • The Bavarian capital of Munich is Germany's second biggest air traffic hub. In 2008 the airport had 34.5 million passengers and won the Best European Transit Airport award at the Skytrax Airport Awards. Munich now handles more Lufthansa (Germany's national carrier) flights than Frankfurt. It is situated within easy distance of the Alps and has two terminals.

    Dusseldorf

    • Dusseldorf in the German industrial heartland is the third busiest airport. In 2007 it served 17.8 million passengers. It has a new terminal, which replaces one destroyed by fire in 1996 with a "Skytrain" connecting the airport to the long distance rail terminal.

    Frankfurt Hahn

    • Situated on the former United States military base at Hahn, 75 miles from Frankfurt, this airport is rapidly becoming one of Germany's busiest. It is a hub for low-cost carrier airlines. The Irish low-cost carrier Ryan Air has made Frankfurt Hahn one of its hubs, diverting a great deal of traffic through there, with passengers taking advantage of cheap "no-frills" air travel. In 2007 Frankfurt Hahn had more than four million passengers, with more than 50 destinations around Europe being served from the airport.
