How to Lease a Car in Italy

If you're going to Italy, short-term leases referred to as buy-back or a purchase/repurchase, cost much less than renting a car during your stay. And you are getting a brand new vehicle complete with insurance and roadside assistance figured into the price. French auto manufacturers are the only ones to offer the program because of a post-WWII attempt to bring French émigrés home. Renault and Peugeot are participating companies. Leasing the car in Italy is possible if you pay an outside-France delivery charge.

Things You'll Need

  • valid international driver's licence (obtainable from AAA for about $15 plus photo)
  • CDW (collision deductible waiver) to protect you if the vehicle is damaged or totalled and if there is injury
  • You must be 18 years or older.

Find the lowest price on the web.

It pays to check prices before you begin. Look into the current leasing rates with an aggregator, a meta-search engine that checks rates at retailers, booking sites and travel agencies. Some aggregators include Kayak.com, Momondo.com and Breezenet.com. After you have the lowest quote, you are ready to contact leasing companies directly.

Check for better prices with reputable companies. Carrentals.com is a newer car consolidator that offers rentals worldwide, including the U.S., Asia and Europe. Easycar.com, known for EasyJet also rents cars. They also provide rentals for the fuel-efficient SmartCars and inexpensive convertibles. AutoEurope.com provides both short and long-term leases and can show you if renting or leasing is cheaper in the long run. Also try Renault Eurodrive at renaultusa.com. This is a direct line to the company's leasing program.

After booking your lease, you will need an international driver's permit. Stop by your local AAA and for a fee of about $15 for photo processing and paperwork, you can get your permit. You can also get guide books and they can set you up with information about fuel costs in Italy (gas is about $6.60) and directions to any points of interest you plan to visit.
