How to Travel to Miami, Florida

Whether you consider yourself a snow bunny heading down to Miami to escape the winter cold or you just want a little Florida sun and fun, you can travel to Miami easily by various modes of transportation. Cultural and sporting events, recreational activities and educational opportunities all beckon visitors toward Southern Florida. Good roads and plentiful public transportation modes ease travel plans for many individuals.

      Travel by air to Miami by booking a flight on one of the over 40 different airlines flying into Miami's International Airport. International carriers include China Air, Egypt Air, New Zealand Air and Varig Brazilian Airlines. Domestic airlines that fly into Miami's airport include Delta, Southwest and Alaska Airlines.

      Check your point of departure to note whether any airlines fly directly from your city to Miami. If not, many airlines fly into Atlanta, a local Delta hub, which then fly the two-hour flight into Miami. At Miami's airport, you can either rent a car to drive into Miami or take a taxi into the city. The drive into Miami from the airport takes approximately 10 minutes.

      Buy an Amtrak ticket to travel to Miami by train. Amtrak's train service serves Miami with routes that come through northeastern and northwestern Florida.

      Trains to Miami come through Lorton, Richmond, Lynchburg, Newport News and Virginia Beach in Virginia; Charlotte and Raleigh in North Carolina; Memphis, Tennessee; New Orleans; Washington, D.C.; Charleston, South Carolina; Dallas and San Antonio, Texas; and Jacksonville, Orlando and Tampa, Florida.

      You can find the Miami Amtrak station at 8303 NW 37th Ave., about 12 minutes away from Miami International airport.

      Ride a Greyhound bus from any location in Florida to Miami. The Greyhound bus company serves Miami with a Greyhound station at 4111 NW 27th St, two minutes west of Miami International Airport. Buses access the Miami Greyhound station from over 20 other cities in Florida, including Tampa, Pensacola, Clearwater, Daytona Beach, Fort Myers, Jacksonville and Key West.

      Drive to Miami with your car or a rental car. Interstate 75 reaches Palm Springs North from northern Florida, about 30 minutes north of Miami, after which you can take Hwy. 826 further south and turn east on Hwy. 836. The I-95 skirts Miami from the north and the south, with the I-195 or the I-395 continuing westward into Miami. Travelers from the west can drive into Miami on the 836.
