Information on RV Electrical Inverters

Power inverters in RVs change AC current (120 volt) to DC current (12 volt) electricity. This gives RVers the ability to operate almost any type of electrical item that requires DC power.
  1. Wattage

    • You have to figure out the size of inverter you need based on the wattage you consume. Inverters can be purchased at most RV dealers.

    Placement

    • Inverters need to be mounted in an area where they are easy to get to and must have air circulating around them to prevent overheating.

    Cable

    • To mount an inverter you must read the manual to find the maximum length of cable allowed between the inverter and the battery.

    Charges

    • Before mounting the inverter you must disconnect the negative battery cable. Before proceeding with installation, wait at least five minutes to allow any remaining charges to dissipate.

    Grommets

    • Once the charge is gone you can connect the ground wire if there is one. The cables run from the inverter to the battery. You can put grommets in any holes you must drill to prevent the cables from rubbing bare.

    Completion

    • Upon completion crimp all connections and connect all necessary wires. Finally reconnect the battery and test it.
