Campgrounds and RV parks near Gainesville, Florida

Gainesville, located in north-central Florida about 72 miles from Jacksonville, is the home of the University of Florida--which with a student body of more than 50,000 is one the country's 10 largest universities. Its role as a college town makes Gainesville a cultural oasis in a region that is largely piney woods and farm country. RVers who are planning a visit to Gainesville will find a number of campgrounds and RV parks in the area.

    • This sprawling complex, located 23 miles from Gainesville in Citra, provides full hookups at all of its 423 sites, 270 of which are pull-throughs. Able to handle even the biggest rigs, the resort encompasses a nine-hole golf course, putting green, driving range, pro shop, restaurant/cafe, heated outdoor swimming pool and a wide array of other recreational facilities. RVers who stay here can purchase high-speed access to the Internet (first two hours free). Grand Lake is also convenient to Ocala, which is 16 miles south of the resort.

    Lake City Campground

    • Located an hour's drive north of Gainesville in Lake City, this 52-site campground is equipped to handle RVs of any size and provides full hookups at 40 sites and water/electric only at the remaining 12, which are reserved for those in tents. The 40 sites with full hookups are also pull-throughs. Other campground amenities include an outdoor swimming pool, recreation hall, fishing pond, laundry facilities and playground. This campground is a good base for visits to Osceola National Forest and the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center.

    Starke/Gainesville KOA

    • This 138-site campground, only 25 miles from Gainesville in Starke, provides full hookups at 133 of its sites and water/electric only at the remaining five. Eighty of its sites are pull-throughs, making this an ideal campsite for big rigs. Amenities include free cable TV, free Wi-Fi access, recreation room with exercise equipment, showers, restrooms and laundry facilities. The campground's in-town location puts it within walking distance of local shops and restaurants.

    Travelers Campground

    • Only 20 miles from Gainesville in Alachua, this 142-site campground offers full hookups, including free cable TV and telephone, at 105 of its sites, 42 of which are pull-throughs.     • Built on a 160-acre wooded tract in the rolling hills of north-central Florida, this 149-site campground is a great place to get away from the dizzying pace of 21st century life. Full hookups, including free cable TV, are provided at all of its sites, 16 of which are pull-throughs.
