DIY Install RV Backup Camera

Newer RVs often come with the option of a backup camera, but if yours does not, the devices are easy to install yourself and are a great safety feature.
  1. Location

    • Take a moment to decide where your backup camera will be installed. The camera should go above the license plate on the back of the unit. This will give you the best view of everything behind you when backing up. The monitor should be mounted somewhere near the dashboard. Keep in mind that you want it to be visible when backing up, but not distracting or in the way when not in use.

    Installation

    • Many backup camera models are wireless, so they are easier to install than wired models. Mount the camera outside the RV and be sure to hook the camera up to the backup lights because the camera turns on when the lights light up.

    Sound Option

    • Some units include a sound mechanism that allows you to communicate with the person helping you back up. If your unit has a microphone be sure to mount the microphone near the steering wheel so you can talk while operating the RV. The speaker should also be placed nearby so you do not miss any important commands from your co-pilot.
