Many things can be done to upgrade your cabinets. The first and easiest could be as simple as changing the hardware. Often, you can find latches and handles that will fit in the existing holes on the cabinet doors, and you just need to screw them in. Or you can replace them with completely new mounting locations. You must then fill the old holes with a wood filler and let them dry. When adding the new hardware, start with a small, drilled hole before screwing the new hardware in to prevent cracking.
If your stain is starting to look old, you can either restain it or paint the cabinets. Cover the counters and furniture with newspaper or a tarp because you will need to sand the cabinets and this makes a big mess. Sand the doors down and take a brush, rag or vacuum to dust them clean. Tape off around the edges of the cabinets before painting or staining so you do not ruin any unnecessary parts abutting them.
You may want to replace the doors entirely on your cabinets. You can buy pre-made replacements that just have to be mounted. You may also go to a home improvement store and get some designed Plexiglas to fit in the place. In this case, cut the panel off of the door, leaving a frame. On the back, you will cut a lip around the whole frame for the new front to fit.
