Regulations on Fifth Wheel Camper

Fifth wheel RVs have different regulations than smaller RVs. Each state has different regulations, so it is important to double check with the states you are traveling through. There are a few regulations that overlap from state to state.
  1. Length

    • In all the states, the longest legal towable trailer is 40 feet. Some states allow up to 53 feet.

    Brakes

    • Brakes are required to be on the fifth wheel in every state. Break away switches so that they can be disconnected are also required if the unit is over 3,000 pounds.

    Width

    • The maximum width of an RV including a fifth wheel is 102 inches. There are some states that only allow 96 inches (the normal width of an RV). The 102-inch version is considered to be a wide body.

    Turning

    • You used to have to worry about what state you were in deciding whether you could turn on red. Now every state has the law that you must first stop on red and yield to pedestrians. You can then proceed with your turn.

    Stopping

    • As far as staying overnight in rest areas, many states do not allow it. You can rest as long as you do not disconnect the trailer from your truck or van.
