Grumman Tiger Specifications

The Grumman Corporation was one of the leading manufacturers of aircraft in the 20th century until it was acquired by the Northrop Corporation in 1994. Through its subsidiaries, it produced two types of aircraft under the name of "Tiger": the AA-5B produced from 1975 to 1979 by Gulfstream American and the AG-5B, which was made between 1990 and 1993 by the American General Aviation Corporation. Both single-engine, fixed-gear aircraft were competitive additions to the civilian and military aircraft market.
  1. Dimensions

    • The AA-5B seats up to four passengers and includes a length of 22 feet, a wingspan of 31 feet 5 inches and a height of 8 feet. The AG-5B also seats up to four passengers and includes the same length and wingspan as its predecessor but with a height of 7 feet 8 inches. Both aircraft include an empty weight of 1,398 lb. with a payload weight of up to 780 lb. for a total gross weight of 2,400 lb. (including standard fuel).

    Engine and Fuel Capacity

    • The AA-5B includes a Lycoming O360-A4K engine that produces up to 180 horsepower at 2,700 rpm with a time-before-overhaul (TBO) rating of 2,000 hours. It also utilizes a 63-inch, fixed-pitch McCauley propeller with a diameter of 75 inches. The AG-5B offers the same engine and TBO rating but includes a 61-inch, fixed-pitch Sensenich propeller with a diameter of 76 inches. The fuel capacity for both aircraft is measured at 37 gallons with a maximum fuel capacity of up to 51 gallons.

    Speed and Loading

    • At a 75 percent power level, the AA-5B offers a cruising speed of 139 knots (159.96 mph) while the AG-5B provides a cruising speed of 141 knots (162.26 mph). Both aircraft include a maximum speed of 148 knots (170.31 mph) and a minimum stall speed of 53 knots (60.99 mph). In addition, both models include a wing-loading amount (the weight an aircraft wing has to support in flight) of 17.1 lb. per square foot and a power-loading amount (the power necessary to carry the aircraft's load in flight) of 13.3 lb. per boiler horsepower unit (bhp).

    Performance

    • Including the 45-minute reserve, the AA-5B offers a climb rate of 850 feet per minute (fpm) and a cruising range of 554 nautical miles while the AG-5B provides a climb rate of 915 fpm and a range of 530 nautical miles. Both aircraft models include the same cruising altitudes of 8,500 feet with a maximum altitude of 13,800 feet as well as a take-off ground roll distance of 865 feet and a landing ground roll distance of 410 feet.
