Robinson R-22 Specifications

The Robinson Helicopter Company, founded in 1973, houses its manufacturing facility in Southern California, where it produces several types of helicopters, including the R66 Turbine, the R44 Raven Series and the R22 Beta II. The R22 prototype was released in 1975 and later set the world altitude record several times for Class E-1 helicopters.
  1. Engine and Instruments

    • The R22, used for applications including livestock mustering and pipeline patrol, uses a Lycoming O-320 B2C 60, one-piston engine. The160 horsepower (hp) engine is lowered to 131 hp for five minutes at takeoff and 124 hp for continuous operation.

      The model features a standard 7- hole instrument panel.

    Speed, Range and Weight

    • The model is rated for operation at 112 miles per hour, or 180 kilometers per hour. With a service ceiling of 14,000 feet, the R22 also boasts a range of 368 miles. Fueled with 100L grade aviation gasoline, the standard fuel capacity is 115 pounds and the auxiliary fuel capacity is 63 pounds.

      The empty weight is listed at 836 pounds, and the maximum takeoff weight is 1,370 pounds. The R22 capacity is one crew member and one passenger

    Dimensions

    • There are two main and two tail rotor blades, with a main rotor diameter of 26.2 feet and a tail rotor diameter of 3.5 feet. The rotor disc area is 497 feet squared. The R22 is 8 feet, 8 inches tall and is 29.6 feet long, including the 8-foot long fuselage.

    Costs

    • The R22 is currently in production. According to the company's 2011 price list, the R22 with standard equipment sells for $258,000 retail. Optional base colors are available from $1,000; solid or metallic black is $2,000.

      The fixed annual insurance costs are listed at $8,050. The fixed costs per hour include reserve for overhaul, $51; direct operating cost, $53; total operating costs, $121. At a cruise speed of 110 mph and fuel consumption of 9.5 gallons per hour, the company lists a 78 cents per road mile cost.
