How to Wire an Aviation Headset

When sitting in the right seat of an aircraft -- the front seat next to the pilot's seat -- you see a variety of radios and communication equipment. You must attach a headset to access this equipment. There are two types of aviation headsets: airplane and helicopter. The wire-cables on each style of headset attach in similar ways, but have different wire-cable ends.

Instructions

  1. Airplane Headsets

    • 1

Place the headset on your head so the right side goes on your right ear and the left side to your left. Aviation headsets are marked right and left. Typically, the right side has the volume control knob, but not always.

    • 2

Grab the two wire-cables coming off the right-side ear piece on the headset. Go to the end of the wire-cables and find the two plugs. There is a large diameter plug and a small diameter plug on airplane headsets.

    • 3

Plug the large diameter plug into the receiver socket to the side of the door, usually near the shoulder belt attachment. Plug the small diameter plug into the small socket under the large diameter socket.

    Helicopter Headsets

    • 4

Put the helicopter headset on your head so the right ear piece is on your right ear, and the left piece on your left ear.

    • 5

Pull the two wire-cables coming off the right-side of the headset until you get the two end plugs. Helicopter headsets have two plugs that are the same size.

    • 6

Put the two plugs from the headset wire-cables into the receiver sockets either at the center console, or on the sockets along the inner walls of the helicopter.
