How to Wire an RV for Satellite

If you travel by RV, you want to have all the comforts of home whenever possible. Unfortunately you cannot always have everything. Many RV parks do not have cable service or charge for it. You can take your system with you and be assured to have TV as long as you have access to power, which most all campgrounds provide.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up a satellite dish tripod by pulling out the three legs and pushing down the center brace similar to a camera tripod. Place the dish on the tripod mount and tighten the mount brackets to attach it to the stand. Place the dish and stand in a location that has a clear view of the southern sky.

    • 2

Set the satellite control box near the TV.

    • 3

Attach an RG6 cable from the TV to the satellite control box.

    • 4

Attach another RG6 cable from the control box to the cable wall outlet and attach it to the outlet.

    • 5

Connect an RG6 cable to the outside connection of the wall outlet and run the cable to the satellite dish. Connect the cable to the satellite. Make sure the satellite is facing south in order to receive a signal from the satellite.

    • 6

Return to the TV and turn on both the satellite box and the TV. Use the remote control to turn on the menu.

    • 7

      Select the setup option.

    • 8

Enter the Zip Code where your RV is at the moment. Click OK and wait for the system to update.

    • 9

Write down the direction numbers the system gives you. The azimuth number is the directional, with south being 180 degrees, you will get a number somewhere between 140 and 225, which is the southern range. You will also get an elevation number to adjust the dish up and down. Straight up is 90 degrees and straight out horizontally is 0 degrees.

    • 10

Adjust the dish to the corresponding numbers you were given by the system. The dish has markings on the adjustments to guide you.

    • 11

Select the signal screen on the system and move the cursor to Satellite A. Select a transponder to use for a signal. You should use 1 through 6. Have someone go outside to the dish to adjust it for a more exact signal while you work with the system.

    • 12

Tell the person who is outside assisting you to adjust the satellite slowly to the left or right and watch for the signal to change. If the signal goes down, tell them to go the other way. You want a signal strength of at least 90 degrees, but 95 is best.

    • 13

Switch the cursor to Satellite B and have the person outside adjust the elevation. Use transponders 23, 25 or 29 for this. Again you want at least 90 degrees.

    • 14

Switch the cursor to Satellite C and check transponders 8, 10 and 12. Select the one that has the best signal.

    • 15

      Close the menu.
