How to Travel on Interrail

Interrail is a European train ticket that offers Europeans of all ages flexible travel around the continent. To travel on an Interrail ticket it's important to establish an itinerary, review the countries covered by the ticket, purchase the correct type of ticket and understand how the ticket is to be used while traveling.

  1. Before You Board

      Purchase your pass directly from the Interrail Web site using a major credit card.

      Review the Interrail map that comes with your ticket and make a list of all routes and trains that require a reservation. The reservation costs extra and is not covered by the Interrail pass.

      Review the train timetables online at the Deutsche Bahn website. This website will give you accurate departure and arrival times for all trains within Europe. Write these times down so you know when to go to the train station.

      Check your reservation list before boarding each train to see if it requires a reservation. If it does, purchase a reservation at the international ticket window in the train station. If your train does not require a reservation, you may board without visiting a ticket window.

      Check the departures board at the train station to see on which track your train will be arriving.

      Record each date of travel in ink on the back of your pass in the travel calendar. before you board the train for that date of travel. This step is only required if you purchased a Flexi Pass.

    On the Train

      Board the train. If you purchased a reservation, you will have been given a seat number. If you have any trouble finding your seat, see a conductor. If you did not purchase a reservation, sit in any seat that is free and does not have a slip of paper next to the seat number listing a destination. If there is a slip of paper, that seat has been reserved.

      Keep your ticket and identification ready. When the conductor arrives, hand over both for inspection.

      Listen carefully to the upcoming stops and exit the train at your destination.
