How to Find Directions From One City to Another

These days, finding directions between cities is much easier than struggling with a road map (though you can still use one) or trying to read road signs in the dark. If you have a GPS unit, either on your phone or in the car, you can use it to get directions. Just be aware that a GPS unit gives you the most direct route, and isn't able to take road closures or construction into account. An easy source of directions is through Google Maps. You can print both a street map and directions on the same page.

Instructions

    • 1

      Go to Google Maps online.

    • 2

Click the link labeled "get directions." This link is located on the left hand side of the page, near the top.

    • 3

Choose your mode of transportation. You can choose directions for various modes of transportation: car, foot, bicycle or public transit.

    • 4

Enter your starting point in line A. If you don't know the exact address, type what as much as you do know. Google will help by suggesting possible locations to get precise directions.

    • 5

Enter your destination in line B. Again, enter a complete address if possible.

    • 6

Click on the link labeled "show options." This gives you a chance to narrow down your search. If traveling by car, you can choose to avoid highways or tolls. The public transit mode allows you to choose an arrival or departure time, what type of route you want and which mode of transit you prefer.

    • 7

Click on the link labeled "get directions."

    • 8

Print or send the directions. You can choose to send the directions to a car's navigation system, a GPS unit, or an email address.
