How to Find Distance in Miles

Getting from point A to B is not what it used to be. You no longer need to calculate the distance between two places using a paper map and rough mileage estimates. With the advent of web mapping, all you have to do is enter some basic information online and you'll be able to figure out the distance and get directions to your destination in an instant.

      Log on to a web mapping tool such as Rand McNally Maps & Directions, Google Maps, or Mapquest.

      Click on "Get Directions."

      Type in the location you will be leaving from in the "Starting Location" box, and type in the destination in the "Ending Location" box. Be sure to enter the cities and states, as well as the country, if you are calculating distances between two nations. If you want to find out the distance between two very specific locations, also be sure to type in the street address of the locations.

      Click on "Get Directions" again. This will not only give you directions from point A to B, but also calculate the number of miles between the two locations. The distance, in miles, will be displayed above the step-by-step directions for getting to the destination.
