Homemade PVC Safari Rack

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC ), a strong plastic, is generally used in water transfer systems, like sprinkler lines. PVC is fairly strong, yet PVC can be sawed to any desired length, if not purchased at the needed size. This piece-together plastic tubing features a diverse collection of angled connectors, which have made PVC very popular as a utility for constructing several diverse and functional frames for such things as shelves, car covers, sun guards, swings and safari roof racks, to name a few. A safari roof rack differs from other racks because it has high sides for mounting.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the roof's existing roof storage, as the PVC roof rack most easily attaches to an existing roof rack.

    • 2

Determine the overall length of the desired roof rack and cut the PVC into either 8-inch or 6-inch lengths, whichever best divides into the desired rack length.

    • 3

Construct the lower portion of the sides. Cement each piece as it is connected to each "T" joint. The "T" joints are to face upward to attach to the mirrored upper assembly with its "T" joints pointing down.

    • 4

Cement the two mirrored upper portions of the sides. This will create four of the six sides needed.

    • 5

Divide and cut PVC lengths to 6 to 8-inch lengths to serve as the upper and lower portions of the width of the rack. "T" joints should all face in the same direction on a pipe.

    • 6

Cut 8-inch PVC pipe for each "T" joint that needs to align to its upper or lower counterpart.

    • 7

Link the upper portion and lower portion of the sides together, to form walls, with the PVC cement.

    • 8

Cement a 90-degree elbow on the corners of each long end so that it can connect to the PVC that defines the width of the rack.

    • 9

Cement and link the four walls of the rack together.

    • 10

Let the cement dry as instructed on the cement container. Be sure all parts are straight.

    • 11

Mount the PVC rack to the existing rack. Drilling holes into the PVC and roof rack to best mount the rack with bolts, washers and nuts.
