How to Tie Luggage

Whether you're taking a road trip across the country or merely need to get all your gear to the airport, you may need to tie your luggage to your vehicle. The easiest way to go about this is to strap your luggage to your roof rack using bungee cords. If it's not done properly, you risk losing your belongings and injuring other motorists.

Instructions

    • 1

Arrange your luggage on the roof of your vehicle. The most important thing to remember is that you want a low center of gravity. The best two tricks to accomplishing this are placing larger, heavier items on the bottom and packing wide instead of high. Most luggage should be relatively square or rectangular in shape; odd-shaped luggage should be stored inside the vehicle if possible.

Run four bungee cords across the width of the luggage rack from the left to the right. Space them about evenly, ensuring all luggage is secured laterally. Each bungee cord should secure to the rack with a hook.

    • 3

Run two additional bungee cords across the length of the luggage rack, criss-crossing the cords you've already secured. Alternatively, purchase a luggage net and secure it on all corners.
