How to Pack a Suit in Luggage

A garment bag that allows a suit to hang inside is still the best method for preventing wrinkles in suits for business travelers. However, the cost to bring additional luggage on many airlines is causing travelers to rethink garment bags, and learn how to properly fold a suit for transport inside a suitcase. There are various techniques possible to minimize unwanted creases; while the best method may depend on your suitcase, this technique should get your suit from point A to point B with few wrinkles.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose fabrics that will not wrinkle easily, such as wool. Cotton and knits are also wrinkle-resistant, but are typically blended with other fabrics that could cause suits to wrinkle.

    • 2

Roll the shirt or blouse that will be worn with the suit. Lay the item flat on a table or bed and roll the sleeves inward; then roll the shirt or blouse from the bottom hem. Place the rolled item -- along with any other rolled items -- in the bottom of the suitcase.

    • 3

Lay the suit jacket on the work surface with the inside lining flat. Lapels will be facing out rather than in toward the work surface; the collar must also be pulled up. Fold both sleeves in half with the cuff facing the lapel, and about even with the armhole of the jacket. Smooth out any wrinkles in the sleeves.

    • 4

Grasp the top of both lapels and pull them inward, bringing each side of the jacket toward the middle and over the coat sleeves. Make sure the lapel edges meet over the center seam of the back of the suit jacket before smoothing out any wrinkles in the coat.

    • 5

Grasp the top of the jacket by the opened collar and gently fold it over toward the hem. Lay the folded jacket over the top of all rolled items, and any other folded items in the suitcase. If using a smaller duffle bag, you may fold the jacket in half one additional time, bringing one side toward the other before placing it in the bag.

    • 6

Lay the suit pants flat on the work surface. Grasping the hem, fold the pants neatly in half. Smooth out any wrinkles, and fold the pants in half again. Lay the pants on top of the suit jacket inside the suit case.

    • 7

Fold or roll a tie, if applicable, and place it on top of the folded suit pants.
