Reserve a moving truck from a company like UHaul. Make sure to inform the company that you will be taking the moving van one-way. Since you will be leaving the continental United States, it is also important to tell the company that you will be crossing into Canada and then back into the United States. Make sure you receive all the proper paperwork about your reservation so you can show your rental truck is legitimate. Trucks will cost anywhere from $1,500 to $2,700, depending on the size of the truck you want.
Pick a route. The most direct route takes you north on I-5 into Canada, then through British Columbia on BC-1 to BC-97 until you reach Prince George. Then take BC-16 to BC-37 until you reach Alaska. From Alaska, go on Alaska Highway to A-1 through Wasilla and then reach your destination in Anchorage. This route will take about 48 hours of driving and covers 2,265 miles. Another route exists, going through Juneau. The route is fewer miles, at 1,868 miles, but takes almost 60 hours of driving time.
Prepare proper documentation when crossing the border. Although your starting and ending points are both in the United States, you must cross through Canada first. Passports or birth certificates and identification is required for everyone in the vehicle. Because the truck is rented, the customs agent may want to see the rental agreement and registration for the truck. The agent may also want to search the vehicle. You have to comply with the request, or else you will be denied entry into the country. Be prepared to tell the agent your purpose for visiting, and tell them how long you expect to be in the country.
