Log on to an online map site, such as Google Maps or Yahoo! Maps. You can find driving directions for any trip.
Click “Get Directions” and enter the full starting address on Google Maps. On Yahoo! Maps, enter your full starting address under “Get Map and Directions.”
Enter the full address of your destination, then click “Get Directions" or “Go.” The site will provide step-by-step driving directions, as well as the mileage and an approximate time for the commute. Multiply these by 2 to get your round-trip length and time.
Compare the time it would take to commute via public transportation by clicking the “By Public Transit” on Google Maps. It is at the top of the “Get Directions” display. Public transportation can be a good alternative to driving, especially in high-traffic areas and big cities where parking is troublesome. It also is beneficial to the environment and often less costly than driving.
Calculate the monthly cost of your commute by using an online commute calculator. Enter the mileage of your daily round-trip, the number of days you work per month and the cost of gas you typically pay, miles per gallon you get on your car and additional commuting costs to determine how much you are spending on commuting alone. This can help determine if it’s necessary to change your commute to cut costs.
