How to Balance Motorcycle Racing Tires

It is extremely important to have the wheels and tires on a motorcycle balanced correctly. Having unbalanced tires could lead to a rough ride and lack of control, thus presenting serious safety concerns. Balancing motorcycle tires works on the same concept as balancing car tires. Though most people prefer to use the static balance method for balancing motorcycle tires, others choose a method involving “DynaBeads.” These are little beads that are placed inside the tire that will automatically balance the tire without the need for weights on the rims. The following instructions are for balancing motorcycle racing tires using the static balance method.

Instructions

    • 1

Wipe the wheels after they have been removed from the motorcycle to remove any excess debris.

    • 2

Position the tire balancer on a flat, level section of floor. In the event you are using a work bench, secure the balancing stand to the work bench using a "C" clamp.

    • 3

Fit an axle through the wheel and place it on the balancing stand.

    • 4

Set the tire balancer to “static mode” and allow turn it on. Maintain a safe distance from the tire balancer during rotation.

    • 5

Using duct tape, add wheel weights where indicated by the tire balancer. Stick-on or clip-on weights are easy and efficient, and can be used when you’ve verified the added weights.

    • 6

Allow the weighted wheels to go through balancing once more to verify a balanced rotation.

    • 7

Secure stick-on or clip-on weights based on the final balance test.
