How to Find a City With Just Coordinates

Before we start looking on a globe or map for your city, we need a brief review of latitude and longitude. Think of the earth as a globe divided into equal sections of 360 degrees, like a circle. Latitude is measured from the equator at 0 degrees latitude. If you go norht, you will find the North Pole at latitude 90 degrees north, and going south, in the other direction, the South Pole will be at 90 degrees south. The value of one degree of latitude will flatten slightly near the poles. Longitude is a measure of distance going east or west from Greenwich, England, which by international agreement has been designated as 0 degrees longitude. Longitude will range from 0 degrees to 180 degrees east or from 0 degrees to 180 degrees west.

  1. Find Your City on a Globe

Let's find a large city in North America, such as New York. The location for this city is 40 degrees and 47 minutes north latitude and 73 degrees and 58 minutes west longitude. The city can be found from the intersection of its latitude and longitude on a globe or map.

Let's start with the latitude. On the globe 0 degrees latitude will be the equator line that goes all the way around the earth. New York City has a northern designation, so it will be in the top portion of the globe. Start from the equator and go up towards the North Pole until you find 40 degrees north latitude line. This will be our first of two reference points so keep it marked.

Now we can trace the longitude. As mentioned before, 0 degrees longitude is in England. You can find this point on the globe by the 0 degrees longitude line or go to England on the globe and find it there. New York City has a West designation so you will be heading west (towards North America). Start from the 0 degrees longitude and head west until you find 70 degrees west longitude line. Keep this line marked.

Locate the point of intersection between the two lines of latitude and longitude that you have found, and that will be the approximate location of New York City.
