Camping at Dogwood Valley, Ohio

About an hour north of Columbus, Dogwood Valley Camping Resort (dogwoodvalleycampground.squarespace.com) is a prime destination for swimming, fishing and relaxing in the woods of central Ohio. The campground has more than 200 campsites, and is within 25 minutes of several area attractions, including Clear Fork Reservoir, and the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course (midohio.com).

    • Dogwood Valley Camping Resort is spread across 28 acres of secluded woodlands on the banks of Whetstone Creek, and the campsites range from open and spacious to shady and secluded. You can camp with a tent or an RV, and many of the campsites are designed as pull-through sites for large RVs. The campground is open from April to October, and hosts a regular schedule of events throughout the open season, including craft workshops, scavenger hunts and group campfires.

    Amenities

    • Most of the campsites at Dogwood Valley have water and electrical hookups, with 20- to 50-amp electricity available. You also can stay at one of 39 full-hookup sites, which have water, electricity and sewer hookups for RVs; and 22 primitive tent sites, which don't have hookups of any kind. Every campsite comes with a picnic table and campfire ring, and the campground has modern restrooms with hot showers and flush toilets. Other amenities at the resort include laundry facilities, RV dumping stations and a camp store that sells ice, firewood, groceries and other supplies.

    Recreation

    • There's plenty to do at Dogwood Valley Camping resort, including fishing at a stocked pond, swimming in a heated pool, and hiking on nature trails that cover terrain ranging from easy to challenging. Dogwood Valley also has paddle-boat rentals, picnic areas, ball fields, horseshoe pits and an outdoor beach. Mt. Gilead State Park (dnr.state.oh.us), which has camping, swimming, hiking, fishing and boating, is only five miles away, and a 25-minute drive takes you to Clear Fork Reservoir, one of the best fishing lakes in the region.

    Considerations

    • You can reserve a campsite at Dogwood Valley Camping Resort by phone or through the resort's website. Rates vary depending on when you plan to visit and what amenities you'd like at your site. Pets are allowed, but must be leashed and cleaned up after, and alcohol is permitted in the campsites only. Starting in 2013, the resort has cabin rentals, which include a queen-size bed, two sleeping bunks, futons, television, and a fully-furnished kitchen and bath. Pets are not allowed in the cabins.
