Campsites Near Water Slide World in the Adirondacks

If long lines and throngs of people don't thrill you, then skip the massive theme and water park at Six Flags Great Escape and cool off at the more intimate and family-friendly Water Slide World (waterslideworld.net) at Lake George, New York. The 12-acre park has enough pirate plunges, river rides and twister slides to please even the most seasoned water-park veteran. For accommodations, Lake George has scores of roadside motels along Canada Street, the main drag through town, but if you're looking for more natural surroundings, a number of campgrounds are within four miles of Water Slide World.
  1. King Phillips Campground

    • Don't let the address at Bloody Pond Road scare you away from King Phillips Campground (kingphillipscampground.com). The well-maintained property is the closest campground to Lake George Village, the beach boardwalk and Water Slide World. It also is adjacent to Warren County Bikeway, a scenic 17-mile walking and bike path. Open May to November, the campground has a wealth of recreational activities. A trolley stops at the camp store to transport campers to the Village, outlet shopping and Great Escape, and a swimming pool, game room, sports field, playground, basketball courts and horseshoe pits are on site. Choose from 220 campsites with full or partial hookups, cable TV, wireless Internet access, picnic tables and fire rings. Some sites are open and sunny, and others provide shade under the tall pines along French Mountain.

    Whippoorwill Motel and Campsites

    • Whippoorwill Motel & Campsites (whippoorwill.biz) has a small, well-kept campground with full or partial hookups for tents and RVs. For those who prefer more creature comforts, standard motel rooms and cabins are available. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day, the facility has a dump station, laundry, restrooms and hot showers less than two miles from Water Slide World. Wireless Internet access, cable TV, a game room, swimming pool and basketball court are available. Like many of the other area campgrounds, a trolley service takes campers to the Village and to Great Escape, and the property has direct access to Warren County Bikeway.

    Lake George RV Park

    • Roughly three miles from Water Slide World, the award-winning Lake George RV Park is a huge campground with almost 400 full-hookup sites spread across more than 150 acres. The green-friendly facility is action-packed with a cafe, arcades, and basketball, tennis and shuffleboard courts, movie theaters, live entertainment and a screened-in bingo pavillion. Open from the first Friday in May to Columbus Day, the campground also provides plenty of water-based entertainment, including an indoor pool, two heated outdoor pools, pedal boat rentals and an on-site kiddie fishing pond stocked with trout. The bike path is nearby and, of course, the trolley stops at this popular campground to deliver campers to the local attractions.

    Adirondack Camping Village

    • Driving down the mountainous and heavily wooded Finkle Farm Road to Adirondack Camping Village might seem like you're headed for "Deliverance" country, but don't let the setting fool you. The campground's topography and scenery, balanced with a host of modern conveniences and recreational amenities, makes for an ideal camping experience. Open from mid-May to mid-September, a game room, playground, heated swimming pools, basketball court, sports field and nature trails provide plenty of entertainment. Daily hayrides, nightly movies, horseshoe tournaments and volleyball games add to the fun. Conveniences include full and partial hookups, a camp store, laundry, dump station, restrooms and showers. While the trolley doesn't make it up to this neck of the woods, Water Slide World is less than a four-mile drive, and the lake and Village are just three minutes away.
