Campgrounds Near the Knutson Dam in Minnesota

The Army Corps of Engineers originally constructed Knutson Dam along Cass Lake in the area of Blackduck, Minnesota. The campground and facilities fell under the control of the National Forest Service in 1926 and now form part of Chippewa National Forest. In addition to camping at the Knutson Dam facilities, visitors can also find two additional facilities within the Chippewa National Forest, less than 10 miles away.
  1. Knutson Dam Campground

    • Knutson Dam Campground is located where the Mississippi River meets Cass Lake along its northeastern shore. The campground features two campsites strictly for camping in tents and 11 mixed-use sites available for recreational vehicles or tents. The sites are in an open area with little shade and are approximately 13 feet by 48 feet in size.

      No electric, water or sewage hookups are available at the campground. Each site has its own grill and picnic table. The park offers vault toilets and two spigots for drinking water. The nearest restaurant, the Pike Hole Bar & Restaurant, a sit-down, family-friendly establishment is five miles away in Cass Lake. The nearest gas station is four miles away along Scenic Highway Northeast.

      The Knutson Dam Campground area has a boating launch ramp and fishing piers for access to Cass Lake. Swimming is also permitted in the lake near the campsites. The National Forest Service imposes a 14-day limit upon all stays at the park. Reservations are accepted for all of the campsites. The campground operates from mid-May through early September.

    Wanaki Loop Campground

    • The Wanaki Loop Campground is less than 10 miles from Knutson Dam (approximately 19 minutes by automobile). The campground consists of one site for tent camping and 44 sites for recreational vehicle or tents. All of the sites are gravel, and some feature shade trees. The sites are a minimum of 12 feet by 60 feet in size.

      While the campground does not offer hookups, flush toilets, hot showers, seven water spigots and a sewage waste dump are available for campers' convenience. Each site has its own grill and picnic table. Public phones are located at the campground, and the park sells firewood. The nearest restaurant, the Canal House, is less than two miles away and is a sit-down establishment appropriate for families. Three gas stations are within seven miles of the campground.

      Wanaki Loop Campground has a boating ramp and swimming, jet skiing and fishing are permitted in Cass Lake. Trails for hiking and cycling wind through the campground. Around half of the campsites are first-come, first-serve. For all the sites, the campground has a 14-day maximum stay. A two-night minimum stay is required for weekends with a mandatory three-night stay for weekends that include a holiday. The campground is open from late May to early September.

    Norway Beach Loop Campground

    • Norway Beach Loop is around 10 miles from Knutson Dam (around 19 minutes by automobile). The campground has one site reserved only for tent camping and 54, dirt, mixed-use recreational vehicle and tent-camping campsites. The campsites are a minimum of 14 feet by 63 feet in size, and one is a pull-through space.

      The campground does not offer any hookups at the campsites. On-site amenities include drinking water spigots, restrooms, showers and a sewage waste dump. The campground sells firewood on-site. A picnic area is featured near the campsites, but each space does not have its own grills and tables. The site is located less than one mile from the Canal House Restaurant and five miles from the area's gas stations.

      The Norway Beach Loop has a boating ramp for access to Lake Cass. The campground has a beach for swimming and fishing. Bicycle trails and short, nature trails are located around the sites. Special events like children's fishing days and festivals are held throughout the summer. The campground has a two-night minimum on weekend stays, a three-night minimum for holiday weekends and a 14-day maximum. The Forest Service accepts reservations for each campsite. The campground is open from late May through early September.
