Government entities manage several RV campgrounds in the Telluride region. All are relatively rustic, few offer electric hook-ups and most offer only a handful of RV campsites within some of the most lush, tranquil parts of the Southern Colorado mountains. Most are only open from June to September when clear of snow.
Alta Lakes
This remote campground off Highway 145 is six miles south of Telluride and sits at 11,000 feet elevation. Alta Lakes campground has undesignated campsites with two vaulted toilets and opens in late June when the snow usually clears. Campers are limited to a seven-day stay. (Managed by the U.S. Forest Service.)
Burro Bridge
The Burro Bridge campground provides campers with 15 sites, a hand water pump and two vault toilets. The campground is somewhat remote, reached by traveling roughly 18 miles south of Telluride toward Cortez on Highway 145, then turning west and traveling about six miles on Dunton Road. RV length is limited to 35 feet. This campground is horse-friendly (In San Juan National Forest).
Lower Beaver Campground
This riverside campground just over 21 miles west of Telluride on Highway 145 offers two RV sites and four tent sides for camping and vaulted toilets. A boat ramp at the campground allows campers access to the San Miguel River. Camping is free, but is limited to a maximum stay of seven days (Managed by the Bureau of Land Management).
Matterhorn Campground
A mere seven miles south of Telluride on Highway 145, the Matterhorn Campground is one of the few state-run campgrounds offering electric and sewer hook-ups as well as showers and a dumping station. The campground features eight RV sites (U.S. Forest Service).
