Joe and Kay's Campground is a small, tent-only campground in Kill Devil Hills, about half a mile from the entrance to the Wright Brothers National Memorial. The campground has grassy, open sites along the banks of a canal. You'll have no amenities, but there are restrooms with warm showers. If you are interested in renting a year-round site, you’ll have access to water and electric hookups.
If you're an RV camper and want to stay close to the beach, consider reserving a site at OBX Campground, located on Kill Devil Hills' Colington Island. OBX Campground has 48 sites that come with a 10-foot by 35-foot concrete pad. Amenities include restrooms with showers, laundry facilities, play equipment, a sanitary dump station, picnic tables and wireless Internet service.
Kitty Hawk RV Park is a campground that offers private beach access. This RV-only campground does not allow pop-up campers or tents, but it is pet-friendly. Every site has electricity, sewer, water, cable television and wireless Internet service and comes with parking for one vehicle.
Adventure Bound Campground is a tent-only campground open year-round. It is located about 4 miles from Kill Devil Hills, on the edge of Kitty Hawk Maritime Forest and just over a mile from the beach. While you're camping at Adventure Bound, take advantage of amenities such as restrooms with hot showers, campground activities and free use of beach accessories, boogie boards and crab fishing equipment.
Campers looking for long-term campsites may want to consider reserving a site at The Preserve at Kitty Hawk Woods, located about 5 miles from Kill Devil Hills. The campground has 31 campsites, each of which is shaded by mature trees, on 10 acres of land. Since it offers year-long leases, the campground has more of a sense of community than campgrounds with short-term rentals. You'll also have access to nearby walking and biking trails, and nearby kayaking canals.
The Refuge on Roanoke Island is located roughly 17 miles from Kill Devil Hills, in Wanchese, a small fishing village. The campground has 44 year-round sites and 15 daily campsites, each with waterfront views. While you're camping at this small park, you can picnic at its covered pavilion, swim in the pool or catch up on laundry in the coin-operated facility located in the bath house.
Out of the four campgrounds within Cape Hatteras National Seashore, Oregon Inlet Campground is the only one located within a 30-minute drive of Kill Devil Hills. The campground is roughly 18 miles south, in Nags Head. It has restrooms with unheated showers, potable water, tables and grills. It doesn't have utility connections and is made of sandy soil, so if you're tent camping, you'll need longer tent stakes.
