Tent Camping Nearest to Lion Country Safari in Florida

Florida's Lion Country Safari, which opened in 1967 in rural western Palm Beach County, was the nation's first drive-through safari attraction. More than 45 years later, the park in Loxahatchee still provides up-close glimpses of free-roaming animals such as giraffes, lions, white rhinos and zebras along the 4-mile safari drive, and also has walk-through attractions such as an aviary, reptile and monkey displays, a carousel, Ferris Wheel, petting zoo, water "sprayground," stores and restaurants. If you have a tent and would like to stay overnight in the area, several campgrounds allow tent camping within an hour's drive of Lion Country Safari, including one right on the property.
  1. West Palm Beach/Lion Country Safari KOA

    • Because the area surrounding the safari park is still relatively undeveloped, by far the most convenient tent-camping option is the on-site West Palm Beach/Lion Country Safari KOA. The KOA facility includes a small tent camping area with sites that include water and electric hookups. The campground does not allow pets. Other overnight options include more than 200 RV and trailer sites, many with full hookups, as well as a primitive group camping area and several one-room camping cabins that sleep four each. Campground amenities include free Wi-Fi, a camp store, laundry facilities, outdoor pool that's heated in the winter, basketball and volleyball courts, a large petanque court, shuffleboard, horseshoes and a playground. Discount camping and cabin packages that include safari tickets are often available.

The island, reached only by boat, has a small campground with 20 tent-only sites available by permit only. Reservations are required and can be made three months in advance, and the maximum stay is three nights. Each site includes a grill and picnic table, and the campground also includes restrooms and showers, a picnic pavilion and large fire ring. Tent camping also is available in designated natural beach areas. Other amenities include swimming areas, a snorkeling lagoon, boat docks, a fishing pier, picnic areas and a 1.25-mile lighted walking path around the island's perimeter.
