Three locations in Freeport have campsites for tents: Winslow Park and Campground, which is a town park, and Recompence Shore Campground and Desert of Maine Camping, both of which are privately owned. Winslow Park and Recompence Shore are both located on the banks of Casco Bay and have waterfront sites available. Desert of Maine is located next to the only natural desert in the state.
Each campground includes some common amenities. All of them include picnic areas, hiking trails, showers, fire pits and flush toilets. Winslow Park does not offer electrical or water hookups, so stay at Desert of Maine or Recompence Shore. The two also include on-site laundry service and wireless internet access, both of which Winslow Park also does not have.
As of 2010, there is a slight variation in cost between the campgrounds. Expect to pay more for waterfront campsites, which range in price from $30 to $44 per night. Standard tent sites range from $21 to $34. However, if you are a Freeport resident, Winslow Park offers substantial discounts.
Tent camping in Freeport is pet-friendly, so feel free to bring your furry friend. Guests must pay $1 per night per pet at Winslow Park. Desert of Maine and Recompence Shore do not charge an extra fee. All campgrounds require pets to be leashed and quiet. Desert of Maine includes a dog course where dogs can run free to exercise.
If you plan to have daytime visitors to your campsite, Winslow Park and Recompence Shore require a daytime visitation fee. Be sure to obey all rules while a campground guest, including quiet hour and fire limits. Camping season in Maine generally lasts from May through October. Maine can be cold, even in the summer months, so be sure to pack appropriate clothing and supplies.
