Savannah, Georgia, Beach Campgrounds

Savannah, Georgia, is located slightly inland, so it does not have beaches itself. There are also multiple large islands to the east of Savannah that separate the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean beaches. Although there are not many, the campgrounds in this area offer spectacular scenery and an abundance of wildlife.
  1. Skidaway Island State Park

    • Skidaway Island State Park is located, naturally enough, on Skidaway Island. Situated directly south of Tybee Island and southeast of Savannah, this state-owned park has 588 acres and beach front along the Skidaway Narrows. Campers can either bring RVs or tents to the park's 87 sites. Features on the grounds include group shelters, playgrounds and a tower that allows guests to observe wildlife. The park hosts many special events. The sites come with cable television, water and electric hookups and can handle RVs up to 50 feet. Amenities include fire pits, picnic areas, restrooms, a laundry facility and a dump station.

    River's End Campground

    • River's End Campground is the only campground on Tybee Island, which is 15 miles east of Savannah. Owned and operated by the city of Tybee Island, the park has tent sites, cabin rentals and full-hookup RV sites that come with water and 30- or 50-amp electric. There are plenty of extras to accommodate campers, including bath houses, a swimming pool, laundry facility, cable TV, dump station, pavilion and picnic areas with tables. Campers can also purchase groceries, LP gas and ice on the campground. There are multiple hiking trails that offer wildlife watching.

    Ossabaw Island

    • Ossabaw Island is located southeast of Savannah and below Skidaway Island. In keeping with an area that has been preserved and kept pristine, the camping here is primitive. There are two campgrounds on Ossabaw Island, called the South End Beach Camp and Shorter Shelter. Each has picnic tables, a covered pavilion, fire pit and an outhouse with non-flushing toilets. Water is provided at the sites, which are for tent camping only. To get to the island, you must have your own boat transportation or be part of trip sponsored by the Ossabaw Island Foundation. The State of Georgia's Heritage Preserve has decreed that no bridge shall ever connect the island to the mainland. This is a nature lover's paradise with all kinds of wildlife, hiking trails and a long stretch of untouched beach.
