Camping at Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas

Possum Kingdom Lake, or PK as it is known, in northern Texas contains approximately 310 miles of shoreline. Known for its clear water, the man-made lake offers boating, fishing, swimming and other water sports. Other outdoor activities, such as hiking, picnicking and camping, are available in the surrounding areas.

  1. Activities

    • There is plenty for campers to do at Possum Kingdom Lake. The first stop for many is Possum Kingdom State Park. High temperatures runs from the mid-90's in the summer to mid-50's in the winter, making it the perfect place for outdoor activities year round. Outside of the state park, boat rental facilities are located in Graford and Caddo. Biking and hiking maps are available through the Possum Lake Chamber of Commerce, which also has a list of public swimming areas. The Cliffs golf course is considered one of the best courses in the state of Texas.

Campground at Possum Kingdom State Park

    • Those who enjoy tent camping won't want to leave Possum Kingdom State Park. They offer "primitive" sites, which contain space to pitch a tent and a fire ring, as well as tent sites with water. RV enthusiasts are also welcome; sites with electricity are available. There are also a limited number of cabins offered for rent. The state park has a boat dock, picnic areas, a playground, store, marina and two miles of hiking trails. The busiest months in the park are June, July and August. Possum Kingdom State Park is run by Texas Parks and Wildlife.

    Private Campgrounds

    • There are many privately owned campgrounds in the Possum Kingdom Lake area. Rock Creek Camp offers tent camping and RV hookups. Weekly and monthly rates are available. Sky Camp has RV hookups and cabins and a hall for large groups. PK Lodge offers RV hookups, tent camping and lakeside cabins. Paradise on the Brazos has RV hookups, tent camping and 8 miles of mountain bike trails.

    Possum Fest

    • Many campers plan their trip around Possum Fest, an annual barbacue and chili cook-off. It includes live music, activities for children, games, silent and live auctions, a raffle, a dance, and, of course, lots of food. Held in October, there are nine different categories in the cook-off. More information and entry forms can be found on the Chamber of Commerce website (http://www.possumkingdomlake.com/).
